5 quick ones with Pozo Wavechamp Victor Fernandez

We squeezed Victor for some of his current feelings after winning the PWA Pozo Wave Grand Slam recently.

1. So Victor, 3 x times PWA Wave Champ at Pozo, you must be pretty stoked?

Oh yes, it’s been a great week for me here at Pozo Izquierdo. I still can’t believe I’ve managed to win 3 times in a row at Pozo.

2. I also read on PWA's website that you haven't lost a single heat during 3 years of competition at Pozo, that's amazing, how do you pull something like that off?

I really don't know, but I've managed to surprise myself every time, hahahaha, I just try to have a lot of fun in every heat I sail, I guess that's it, just trying to have fun and make the most out of it.

3. How come Pozo suits your sailing style so well?

Well I've been spending a lot of time here, 1 month every summer for the last 9 years to be exact so that helps out for sure, and after all this time I've come to know the place very well, you know the tricky and the smooth parts of the place.

4. How was this year's win different from the past two-year's victories?

Well every year the conditions are different, so you have to adapt to the place from year to year and that makes every event and victory ever so unique for me.

5. Also winning on the brand new 2009 Icon's that you've been involved in designing must feel pretty damn good. What makes the Icon a winning sail?

That one feels feels really good cuz we've worked real hard to create a light, stable and powerful sail with a broad wind range that brings out the best in every sailor in any conditions and I really think that we've succeeded in this matter. Also the new smaller sizes makes all the difference at a place like Pozo.

6. Finally how will you celebrate your victory?

Get all my friends and family together for a genuine fiesta when I get back home to Almeria.

Victor Fernandez wins at Pozo

For the third year in a row Simmer Style's Victor Fernandez (E-42) once again claimed the victory at the PWA Wave event in Pozo, this time on his brand new 2009 Icon's. This means 3 years of straight victories at Pozo for the amazing Spaniard who according to PWA has yet not lost one single heat during this time. Congratulations from the entire Simmer Style crew goes out to Victor for his amazing performance. Fellow Simmer Style teamrider Jonas Ceballos (E-40) made it into the Top 10 with a 7th place while riding the brand new 2009 Misson X sail.

Here's what PWA wrote about Victor's victory:

"A repeat of 2007 sees Victor Fernandez and Daida Moreno crowned event winners after an awe inspiring double elimination finale at the Pozo proving ground.

For the third year running, Victor Fernandez (Fanatic, Simmer Sails, MFC) has shown defiance to lay claim to the prestigious Pozo wave title, defeating Ricardo Campello (JP, NeilPryde, MFC) in the final of the double elimination.

Last stop was Fernandez, who’s won in Pozo the last two years. For Campello to even challenge the reigning champion, he’d not only have to go big, but also match Fernandez’s creative and aggressive wave riding.

Fernandez’s first run showed why he continues to dominate at this venue, he effortlessly landed a perfect stalled forward and a backloop, but not just standard jumps, these were massive! Campello, knowing he had work to do, pulled a perfect double forward out the bag, only for it to be mimicked by Fernandez moments later.

Fernandez allowed Campello no breathing space, with every move equaled or bettered. Checkmate came when the Spanish powerhouse clocked up an awesome wave ride, including a goiter on the wave face. Campello had fought bravely, and was by no means outclassed, but the day belonged to Fernandez.

Fernandez’s victory marks an impressive run for the Spaniard; Three years of competition in Pozo, three victories, and not a single heat lost. Impressive, by anyone’s standards."
