2012 IN PICTURES | A MEMORABLE WINDSURFING YEAR

2012 IN PICTURES | A MEMORABLE WINDSURFING YEAR

Dad of the Year - John Skye became a father and JC caught this cover-shot from the air as Skyeboy logs vital water time before getting used to changing diapers instead of rigs...

2012 was an especially memorable year for windsurfing. The sport endured the low of Olympic ejection followed by new highs with reinstatement to the Games, memorable sessions and PWA events and, of course, new records on the speed course.

Here’s some images capturing unique moments from the past twelve months.

From everyone at Windsurf, we wish you and your families a happy and healthy New Year and hope that the wind blows fairly for you in 2013.

Women's Slalom World Champ Valerie Arrighetti sets the pace ahead of Sarah-Quita Offringa in Turkey
Rising Stars - Koester, with the overall and Youth wave titles, joins PWA Youth World Champs Maciek Rutkowski (Slalom) and Youp Schmidt (Freestyle) on the Sylt Podium. Maxime Van Ghent won the Ladies Youth Title and Delphone Cousin the Ladies Slalom Crown
More up-and-coming danger, another Gran Canarian threat in the form of Alessio Stillrich
Gollito is back - after missing out in 2010 and 2011 the Venezuelan nailed a 5th World Title and once again raised the bar for wannabee contenders
Event performance of the year? Alex Mussolini tore Sylt's gnarly North Sea waves apart, as did his team mate Thomas Traversa in Denmark
Windsurf mag and PWA Photographer JC says Ricardo Campello's bailout in Tenerife was the most radical of the entire competition season
Philip Koester was quite simply unbeatable once again in the waves? How long can his dominance reign for?
Session of the Year? JC recalls this wild and windy Ho'okipa day as the best in decades - all captured in our August issue. On this day Koester nailed a perfect backloop off-the-lip...
Jump of the Year? PWA Head Judge Duncan Coombs said Alex Mussolini's stalled forward in El Medano was the sickest of the century, so far.
Dad of the Year - John Skye became a father and JC caught this cover-shot from the air as Skyeboy logs vital water time before getting used to changing diapers instead of rigs...
A Golden year for Dorian Van Risselberghe who triumphed at London 2012 and rode the emotional roller-coaster of bowing out of the 'final' Olympic Games a winner only to find another campaign is now on-the-cards!
L'Annee d'Albeau? An unprecedented season for 'A2'. A 20th World Title followed by his awe-inspiring Speed World Record of 52.05 knots in Namibia.
...Albeau didn't have it easy on the race course though and was pushed hard by Bjoern Dunkerbeck all the way. Happy New year everyone!

Windy End of to the Year!

As the new year approaches windsurfers across much of the country have been treated to brilliant conditions. Despite the cold temperatures the winds have been blowing and social media is full with happy comments of windsurfers taking to the water. The forecast is looking pretty good across many spots for New Year’s Day too, so where will you be taking to the water?

Boards would love to hear about your new year sessions, and of course see some photos too; let us know where you’ve been out either in the comments below or check out the How Was It For You thread in the forum here.

Some photos we have seen are from the OTC/Puravida guys out enjoying the windy weather in Weymouth, looks like they’re getting in some early slalom training for the year ahead!

“I’m writing this as the wind is buffeting my window with gusts of over 47knots. This is the fourth windy day in a row and whilst many of the locals were ripping it up in the waves of Ringstead, Kimmeridge and Overcombe, the Harbour has played host to some awesome conditions. Kev Greenslade, Si Pettifer and Si Cofield were seen getting some training in on Friday for the start of the 2013 BSA calendar. Maybe a tandem will be entered in the Pro Fleet next year!?

And whilst a lot of the latest 2013 kit was rented in the balmy conditions yesterday, local speed don Pete Young gave Scotty ‘Dogfish’ Stallman some trade secrets, pushing his PB to 29.06knots! He is sure to break the 30knot barrier before his twelfth birthday … we’re sure not many can say that! Wishing everyone all the best for 2013. See you in the water.
