Portrait of Mark Angulo

In the winter of 2010/2011 we spent two months filming on Maui. The Valley Isle remains the Mecca of windsurfing, and one of its godfathers has to be Mark Angulo. Brendan Pyatt talks about meeting his hero.

‘I obviously knew who Mark was, pretty much everyone interested in wavesailing has heard of him, his antics and his family as they are such a huge part of windsurfing culture. But the first time I saw his sailing at Ho’okipa is was really impressed by his incredible talent. This combined with his years sailing this spot means he is really entertaining to watch and is definitely one of the stand outs. It’s amazing to watch one the older guys out on the water pushing it so hard. He picks up heaps of waves and then just does his thing on them which, it has to be said, more often than not ends with a mean looking wipe-out! He totally has his own agenda out there and its really refreshing. I guess being older and not competing has given him the mind space and confidence to explore his own thing; bizarre tricks above hefty waves.’

‘During the interviews and shooting at his shaping bay it became quickly apparent that he is a really humble guy who’s totally at peace with himself, which is something I was surprised about, given his colourful past! I must admit I was pretty star struck and nervous but after a while I just forgot I was working with one of my hero’s and just had a cool time hanging out with a decent, down to earth guy. We had to leave out so much of the interviews which was a shame as he said a bunch of great things about various topics but we hope this clip does credit to his sailing and also gives an honest insight into the character that’s Mark Angulo.’

Junior Camp in Denmark

Our rider Kurosh Kiani sent us this report from his summer break back in Denmark where he recently joined a kids junior camp. Here is a small story from a week full of windsurfing fun by Kurosh.

For the slalom sailors of the world there has been a small break in between all of the world cup competition and what not the last couple of weeks. The summer is now at its full high in Denmark and probably the best time that you can catch in the world right this moment.

Not long after I came back from the lovely island of Aruba I set out on a mission again, but this time a completely different one. This time I was not in focus but a big group of kids who had chosen to spend the first week of their summer vacation windsurfing until they dropped.

The destination was the area of Ringkobing Fjord which is big enclosed lake connecting to the west coast of Denmark. This area is known for bringing the most amount of windy days during the year.

My friend Lars and I headed over there from Copenhagen and met up with all of the youngsters who were already setting up camp for the next 5 days. After a while all of their parents left and there was now only one thing on their minds, and that was to hit the water. I cannot believe how much motivation there was in these youngsters. I woke up the first morning around 7.30 and peaked outside the window of the van and I could see them rigging up already. Jeeez. Well I just had to follow along, but I knew that I would probably be the last man standing, so I put on the wetsuit and head out on the water.

I was amazed how good these kids were. Nearly everyone of them could gybe and they were just racing around me like small champions. We did many hours of coaching for each of their individual needs until it was lunchtime. After that we hit the water again and windsurfed until no one could hold on to the boom anymore. Thats exactly how I remember it from the time I was at their age, I just couldn’t get enough, and I cant say how big of a motivation it was for me personally to hang out with all of these motivated kidsters.

This was basically the program the days we had wind. We also had couple of days without wind where we spent out energy on some story telling from around the world, some sports and general chill out true surfer style.

264298_10150316292754180_635364179_9476554_6265534_n

The last day we closed it all down by setting up a big fire to make bread on stick and of course marshmallows along with some classical campfire singing. It was great fun and these kids brought us great entertainment and joy.

In the end the camp was packed up and all of the parents came by to pick up the youngsters who now were equipped with lots of new knowledge and technique to challenge the upcoming Danish summer conditions.

Josh makes podium in Korea

The PWA worldcup in Ulsan is over and the Angulo team returns with victory as Josh makes it all the way to 3rd place making it his best slalom result yet. The result of extensive R&D work on the Magnum boards is now showing its results making this years Magnum range the ultimate weapon for slalom battle.

The Ulsan PWA event was long and offered difficult wind conditions but with his combination of the Magnum boards and the 2011 Gun Sails Josh managed to stay consistently in the top finishing it off with a final win.

Here is a couple from Josh about his podium finish at Jinha Beach, Ulsan: “Feels Good! After some trials and tribulations in trying to get my slalom legs, I finally managed to get a podium finish for the first time in my slalom career. The hard work in developing the new Magnums combined with Gun Sails substantial R&D program has finally given me the equipment to battle with the best of em’. I don’t want to get ahead of myeslf and I know I have to continue to take it one start and one jibe at time, but I can definitely say that I have a greater motivation than ever before to keep tuning my equipment for maximum effeciency. Thanks to all the friends out there who have been very supportive !

PWA Ulsan 2011 – Day 4

Day 4: With a teasing thermal wind never quite blowing in sufficient measure to resume racing, we caught up with Josh Angulo to find out the secret behind some of his finest racing to date, Angulo Boards, his move to Boston and more…

Josh Angulo

Josh Angulo

PWA: It would be fair to say that in the brief period of racing we’ve had out here in Korea, you’ve delivered some of your finest slalom form to date; what’s the secret?

JA: “There’s a bunch of things. We’ve worked hard on our gear for sure, there’s been a lot of effort put into it over the past year. I don’t know really, sometimes you’re able to just settle your mind down. So just mentally for me, it’s about not being too excited, but excited enough to be able to get around the course fast. And also there’s a lot of good things going on in my life right now, so i’m pretty relaxed overall, i guess that’s the main thing.”

PWA: Do you feel more pressure on you now that you’re sitting on a podium position with everyone lining you up in their sights?

JA: “For sure i’m feeling the pressure, as i think anyone in my position right now would do. I’m just trying to keep everything in perspective, i’ve had one really good day of racing, and the next day is just another day of racing. Hopefully i can keep that mind set without freaking out, i think it’s important to stay level headed and just go sail again and do my best.”

PWA: It’s obviously early to call, but do you think you’ll be able to carry this form through the rest of the year?

JA: “Well Vietnam was a big event for me, i know i didn’t have a great result, but i was feeling i had some good speed there. I guess it was the first time that after a hard year last year, that i was feeling confident, so i came to this event really happy with my gear, which really grew my confidence. Now i know i can do it, i have no excuses other than my own personal performance, and i think that’s a good place to be in.”

PWA: To most windsurfers, you’re known as a wave world champion, what’s the attraction of slalom when you could be ripping Ponta Preta?

JA: “Slalom’s something i’ve never really done at a high level. I mean i started out slalom sailing at a young age, but i never really achieved any major success. I’ve had a few results here and there, but nothing really to write home about, so it’s some unfinished business personally, and it keeps me in tune with the development of the boards, and it keeps me traveling around the world and meeting people. As much as i love wave sailing, i don’t want to just hold up in Cabo Verde for the rest of my life. It keeps me in touch with the industry and it’s a great challenge.”

PWA: So you’re a wave world champion, is the next step slalom world champion?

JA: “For sure, it would be good to retire with a slalom title as well. It’s definitely something i’ve considered. Obviously i understand that i have some serious work to do, and i have certain things i have to organise in my personal life to give me more time to dedicate to slalom racing. When that happens i’m sure we’ll start seeing the benefits.”

PWA: You mentioned that you’re feeling really confident with your gear, are this year’s Angulo boards the fastest yet?

JA: “For sure, this is the third year that we’ve done the Magnum range. We’ve had good gear in the past, but we’ve been learning you know. We’ve learned exactly what is a good slalom board for racing conditions. It’s early planing, gybing, upwind and down wind performance. There’s so many factors to consider, and obviously you have to make compromises along the way to produce a great overall product to get you around the course easily. That’s what we’ve been focusing on, easy to access performance to get you around the course as fast and as easily as possible.”

PWA: We’ve heard that you’re moving to Boston, can you tell us a bit about that?

JA: “That’s been a move that my wife and i have been looking at for some time, we just wanted to go back to the US for a few years, and give my son some schooling in the US for a couple of years, and make sure his English is up to par. I also want to work on the distribution for the Angulo brand and Gun Sails in the US. So we chose Boston with its easy access to Cabo verde, and it’s just a great place that we really like.”

PWA: How will that work with slalom training?

JA: “Well i live on a little island connected to the mainland by a road, so there’s wind and water all around me. Sure it might be a little cold, but there’s conditions there on my door step. It’s like; if you live in a candy store, you don’t necessarily want to eat candy the whole time. I’ve been living in windsurfing’s candy store (Cabo Verde) where i’ve been totally spoiled. Sometimes i wouldn’t even sail there when it was right in front of me. I think in Boston i’ll gain a new appreciation for the sport. I want to establish it as a base to test the slalom gear from, and you know, it’s just going to be a new thing, and a breath of fresh air for me.”

Thanks to Josh for taking the time out to talk to us. Josh Angulo is sponsored by Angulo Boards, Gun Sails and Dakine.

Tomorrow morning’s skippers meeting has been scheduled for 10.30am, with a first possible start at 11am. Be sure to follow all the action from day five in Korea from then onwards.
