2013 Goya Quad 84 Custom Pro
2013 Goya Quad 84 Custom Pro Test Review Report
LOW-DOWN
The Custom Quad is Goya’s focused hard-core wave board line, available in six sizes ranging from 68 up to 104 litres. The range remains unchanged for 2013.
AT-A-GLANCE
A compact outline, with a narrow pintail and plenty of width through the middle extends forward into a wide nose. The deck is flat and it has excellent dual density pads along with quality MFC footstraps fitted. The underside features double concaves that blend into vee in the tail and it has a decent amount of rocker in the nose, with a slight kick in the tail. The quad fin cluster is a (Maui Fin Co.) MFC QS300 setup, consisting of two 9cm mini Tuttle box fins at the front and two 15cm US box fins at the back. The Custom Pro construction has extra carbon reinforcement patches on the rails, as well as under the mast track and footpads.
PERFORMANCE
With plenty of width around the mast foot and well-distributed volume the Goya 84 Quad is very stable and quick to lift onto the plane and tracks very smoothly. The sailing position in-the-straps is extremely comfortable with the soft pads underfoot helping to deliver a great level of control and an easy ride in all conditions. Getting around the break is no hassle as it points up-wind very well and, off the wind, is quick – perfect for jumping. In the air it’s easy to control and always lands comfortably. On the wave there’s a real surfing-style feel and plenty of grip from the quad fins in all sizes of surf – you can really lay the rail in the turn and carve it as hard as you like to hit any type of section.
THE VERDICT
The Goya Custom Quad is a very versatile board that excels in a range of true wave-riding conditions. If carving up walls of water is your main focus and you want a board that can tear it up wherever you go then this is the one for you.

2013 Quatro LS Quad 90 Premium
2013 Quatro LS Quad 90 Premium
2013 Quatro LS Quad 90 Premium Test Review Report
LOW-DOWN
The Quatro Quad LS is Levi Siver’s signature quad fin model designed to go anywhere and do anything. Sitting in the range alongside the Thruster model (tested last issue) it’s intended to offer slightly more grip for bigger, faster surf. This is a new shape for 2013 and is available in sizes from 72L right up to 110L.
AT-A-GLANCE
With a rounded nose with a round pintail, this is one of the longer boards on the test and it also has plenty of width across the middle as well as in the nose. The deck is quite flat and it has deep cushioned footpads as well as quality MFC (Maui Fin Co.) straps fitted. The bottom features double concaves through the middle, that blend into vee in the tail and there’s a moderate amount of rocker in the nose and tail. It comes with a MFC QS-350 quad fin set-up that consists of two 9cm Mini-Tuttle fins, along with two 16cm US fins in the back. The Premium construction is claimed to be lightweight and highly durable and this model was the lightest on test despite its extra length and volume. (All weights quoted inclusive of straps and fins.)
PERFORMANCE
It feels quite voluminous, as you’d expect for 90L but the float is well-packed as the board doesn’t feel big underfoot. It lifts smoothly and planes early, with a well-planted and tracked ride. From the straps it’s very comfortable thanks to the thick pads that cushion the ride. It grips well through carves and holds its speed through the bottom turn in larger waves. Off the top this quad gives good options for a variety of manoeuvres – from looser smacks and hacks to high-speed full-rail cutbacks. It’s very adept in the air and the cushioned pads soften any big landings.
THE VERDICT
The Quatro Quad LS is very capable in all conditions but it definitely favours the bigger and better surf, particularly fast sideshore conditions, where it really excels and has the edge over the Thruster LS, which is slightly better in bumpier or smaller side-onshore waves.

GOYA / QUATRO / MFC HEADQUARTERS VISIT ON MAUI
The fifth of December 2012. In the Netherlands where I live all people celebrate ‘Sinterklaas‘ (like Santa) and give each other presents. This day I visited the Goya/Quatro/MFC flagship store in Haiku (Maui) and I felt like a kid entering the biggest candy store in the world! From the outside the building looks very simple and even a bit shabby but when you enter it you experience a very nice and well organised windsurf store.

In fact Goya, Quatro and MFC (Maui Fin Company) are different brands but they collaborate and combine their specialities/secrets as a team under one roof. Pascal Bronnimann (born in Switzerland) is the sales manager for Quatro International and Goya Windsurfing and also founding member of +H2O (clean water project). He’s probably the first one you meet when you enter the store and can tell you everything about the brands he’s representing. When I visited the store Keith Teboul and Francisco Goya were upstairs in their offices. Keith, the revolutionary board shaper and rider, was just about to leave to catch some waves. A good thing to know that these guys are on the water whenever they can. Not only for testing but also for having a good time. I saw Keith ripping the waves at Hookipa the day before and it was impressive to see him riding the waves with his radical style. Francisco (the always smiling windsurf legend) took some time and offered me a tour through the building.

When you enter the store it looks like a regular store with boards, sails, fins and accessories but there are some special (and some hidden) rooms in this building. To begin with the Goya sail design room with a big table to put the sails on and all kind of colourful elements for designing a sail from top to bottom. I think in this room the first Goya sails saw the light!

On the right side of the building you find the Quatro board range over the years. Quatro boards had a lot of custom paintings on them in the early years. Keith Teboul shaped boards for Kauli Seadi (2005 World Champion) and many other pro riders whose names must remain anonymous because they officially sail for other brands.

The Quatro shape room, here they produce the custom boards for clients and also prototypes for a new board range. A really cool thing is that there’s a big glass window in the shop connected to this shape room so you can actually see the shaper being busy if you’re in the shop!

In the shop there are also some Quatro prototypes, not even painted yet but good for testing what shape works best for you. On some pictures of Jimmie Hepp you see these unpainted boards on the waves of Hookipa. An ideal location to test these raw beauties.

Okay, back to the Goya side of the shop. I asked Francisco which boards are better, the Goya’s or the Quatro’s? He answered: “Of course the Goya’s are better!” Eehm, maybe not the best question to ask the man himself
He showed me that if you ride a quad board in lighter wind conditions you can only use the two big fins in the back fin slots of the board. Don’t forget to close the empty fin slots.

So you ride it as a twin fin for earlier planing, a bit more speed and a skatier feeling. So quad guys, don’t be lazy with light winds and try this fin setting at your home spot!

All Goya and Quatro boards are equipped with high quality MFC fins. These fins are designed by Pio Marasco, a passionate fin shaper (since 1986). His vision is to contribute the best fins to the market. MFC counts 13 World Championships titles for different brands and riders.

Goya also has a sail range, lets have a look at their wave sails: the five batten Guru Pro (control wave) and Eclipse Pro (power wave) and the new superlight four batten Banzai Pro (quad wave). The four batten Banzai Pro has a massive range of use and is also suitable for the somewhat heavier sailor. For the kids who like to sail in nuclear storms the four batten Storm Pro is a good option (2.5 – 3.0 – 3.5 – 4.0). A good thing is that Goya is focussing on developing gear using sustainable materials for the windsurfing industry so the environmental impact will be less in the future.

The board shaping room. Man build custom boards and prototypes are born in this room. The floor feels a bit sticky

Shaping the board out of foam. This is the place where the boards are carefully tweaked and fine tuned. The Goya PRO boards use Corecell™ foam to increase stiffness and reduce the weight of the boards’ composite structures.

The paint room. In this room the ‘white’ boards are equipped with paint or being air-brushed with graphics. After that the stickers, non-slip and deck pads get added.

Francisco showed me a custom painted board, the artwork was done by ‘Nano’.

In recent years, they won a number of awards and trophies in their windsurf careers. You can see them around the shop.

One thing is for sure: these guys know what they’re doing and I think they’re far ahead of the competition. The combination of excellent board shapes, high quality materials and outstanding graphics is a sure hit. You can feel their dedication and passion for the sport, they’re not just salesmen doing it for the money. I can’t wait to test one of their boards and if you’re on the island of Maui I highly recommend visiting this Goya/Quatro/MFC store in Haiku (if there’s no wind of course).
Store hours: everyday from 8:30 AM – 2:00 PM.

Kevin Pritchard : US 3
Look up windsurfing on wikipedia.com and you’ll find Kevin Pritchard listed under ‘International Stars’ and that’s because Kevin is, without doubt, one of the best all-round sailors in windsurfing having won a countless amount of champion titles since he turned professional at 18. One of the highlights of his career has to be in 2000 when he won his first PWA World Wave championship and at the same time defeated Bjorn Dunkerbeck who was 11 times world champion.
Kevin is based in Maui and helps run Pritchard Windsurfing alongside his brother Matt who runs windsurf clinics.
Other than windsurfing, Kevin is also a talented photographer and is a part of Maui Nerd Productions, a video production company. You may well recognise the name if you watched any of the great videos from the American Windsurfing Tour last year or some of the recent ones from Santa Cruz earlier this month.
Reading through Kevin’s interview you get a small insight into who he is and also his quirky sense of humour but above all else it’s awesome to see yet another windsurfer express satisfaction in how they’ve lived their life thus far as well as the importance of family and their support.

Marcilio Browne (Brawzinho)
Most kids start learning to walk at around one year old and then it’s something that becomes second nature – you don’t even have to think about it, right? Having begun windsurfing at the very young age of 4, windsurfing has obviously become second nature to Marcilio Browne. I have no idea if, when he sails, he has to think too much about what he’s doing but whatever’s going on inside when he’s sailing he makes it look effortless and totally instinctive … kind of like walking on water!
Brawzinho turned pro at 12 and went onto win his first PWA event at 16 and in 2007, at only 18 years old, he became freestyle world champion. He is one of the latest additions to the Goya team and now concentrates primarily on wave sailing and has been in some of the recent great windsurfing movies such as Four Dimensions and Minds Wide Open.
