Action in the UK

Just because the Vass season has finished, it doesn’t mean things have gone quiet. The Global team has continued to chase the action, even if they’ve swapped boardies for steamers, surfing and windsurfing around the South West. Many of the riders were also helping out and having fun at the NWF (National Windsurfing Festival), where Colin & Max also got some Global Media action, heading up some interviews. The conditions were fine, with enough wind to quiet the doubters: there is even photographic evidence of Muzza doing a loop.. apparently!

Globalshots founder Jay took some time to check out a new sport and photograph a bit of F1. Lucky he’s used to shooting speeding targets: check out the photos at the Globalshots Pictures Facebook page.

A few of the Global Riders took a sunshine break to Costa Brava for the Starboard 2012 Dealer conference, and back in the UK of course we can’t forget Aussie Kiss, which was another epic session full of familiar faces… And the fun is continuing with the first ever UK edition of the Global RAVE. Head to our Events page to find out more.

Lastly, we’re excited to announce the latest arrival in the Global Clothing Line, with 14 colours to choose from, the Global Beanie! Email info@globalshots.co.uk to get yours now, just in time for the snowy season!

A day in the life of GlobalShots Director Jay Haysey

Jay Haysey has been forging a path into the depths of windsurfing, taking the slightly alternative route as professional photographer. This has opened up a huge host of opportunities to mingle with some of the finest athletes to have stepped on this Earth. With a keen eye on marketing and social media, it seems his skills are not only snapping from behind the camera. Read on to find out more as Jay Haysey leads you in to a day in the life as the GlobalShots Managing Director – keeping things ‘refreshingly different’…

6.00-08.00am

The days starts pretty early in Maui, so it’s up for a morning surf or SUP with some snacks to keep the energy up, back for breakfast and the all important coffee to get the day started off.

08.00-11.00am

This is usually spent on Skype, photoshop, social media sites & replying to emails. Running the GlobalShots enterprise usually consists of Skype meetings to potential and current clients, we just signed a deal with MFC to run there online social media marketing & I’m working hard on a photographic project in Greece this summer in Vassiliki. Then there is downloading and editing pictures from the day before to upload to the GlobalShots multimedia sites for our fans to enjoy, keeping the website and Facebook pages fresh with our content is an important part of our work. I also use this time to do the updates for the agreements we have with other companies like Club Vass, Two Elements watersports & now MFC, this also involves keeping their online sites fresh and exciting, using our photographic and video skills.

11.00-14.00pm

Check the conditions outside, see if there are waves/wind but most importantly I check the clouds to see what the light is like for shooting, this particular day I was up in the heli with JC during the Starboard photoshoot, They were shooting free ride and then jumping down at a spot called camp one, this kind of thing fills a few memory cards and in turn causes a lot more work for the following morning, so I always have that in mind when the camera is set to 10 pictures a second! You don’t want to miss the action from the heli because it costs $750 per hour but also the more pictures you take the more time you spend on your laptop downloading them, through experience you end up finding the right balance!

Lunch on the move!

15.00-18.00pm

I usually call a few guys to check the conditions again at the beaches. I’m mostly doing watershots at the moment so Ho’okipa seems right for that as thats where the action is, and you need the action while your swimming otherwise your mind tends to wonder off and you start to think what is swimming below you!

18.00-19.00pm

Time to get rid of the last bit of energy and to burn off all the snacks. We set up a prison gym in front of our house, the workouts are structured by Neil who used to work for MPG! He’s designed the workout to improve swimming and duck diving mast high waves.

19.00-22.00pm

Is chill out time, food, beers, BBQ’s or partys – Lately the American Windsurf Tour had an opening party up at the Goya/Quatro factory, free beer and food which was epic, the place got stickered up pretty well!!!

PuraVida Cornwall Wave Classic 2011 – Day 1

2011 pura vida Cornwall wave classic Ed Sinclair reports from an action packed hard-core day of competition at the 2011 Cornwall wave classic in Gwithian.

A fiery combination of mast high waves and around twenty knots of wind hammered Gwithian beach from dawn until dusk, tempting a huge fleet to the shores of Cornwall and allowing a full day of competition to be completed. The amazing conditions made for a spectacular show as the UK’s most radical wave riders strutted their stuff in a bid to make their way through each round. In the sixteen man pro fleet the judges were looking for the two most impressive wave rides, and the sailors certainly delivered.

Huge aerials, goiters and super-aggressive slashes saw Andy ‘Bubble’ Chambers, Chris ‘Muzza’ Murray and Adam Lewis advance through their heats, but in the end it was Jamie Hancock that took the victory in the single, with Ben Proffitt in second and Timo Mullen in third.

The standard was at an all time high in the womens fleet, as the twelve ladies gave it everything they had got in the tough conditions. Lucy Robson was on fine form all day ripping the waves to pieces to secure her first place finish in the final. Sarah Bibby pulled out all the stops to claim second place, and Jo Wright impressed the judges to finish in third. The UK’s youth fleet proved they certainly have the skills in the big waves and it was Raistrick that walks away as the winner in the single elimination, with Tom Bennett Lloyd in second and Cox in third. The masters also completed the single elimination and series leader Mark Lloyd pulled it out the bag for the third time this season to take the win.

The enormous amateur fleet still has a number of heats to complete to finish the single but Will Rogers, Aleksy Gayda and George Bowell were looking like they were hungry for the victory. The howling winds and monster waves are forecast to continue for the remainder of the weekend so the judges have called for another early start tomorrow. (Skippers meeting at 9am). This evening Sandsifter café will be hosting the infamous monster ball so there will certainly be some sore heads in the morning.

The Cornwall wave classic is sponsored by Franklin & Marshall, hosted by Pura Vida Boardriders and the BWA, with support from No Limitz Masts, RB sails and Sandsifter, with thanks to the National Trust and Duchy of Cornwall.
