Skyeboy on Maui

The latest Brit to arrive on Maui for photoshoots, we catch up with John Skye and find out what’s happening on the North Shore…

As one of RRD’s principle riders and chief R and D testers, John Skye brings his sick wave sailing skills to the team. Flying out to Maui for the photoshoot season, Skyeboy has scored epic conditions every day since arriving in Hawaii. It’s a tough old life…

“I have now been on Maui for just over a week and it has been pretty epic. So far I have sailed everyday, including 2 or 3 mast high days. Its pretty standard out here, with the whole world turning up for their photo shoots. Everyone is ripping, so its fun both to sail, and also to sit on the beach watching the action. The photos we are taking are mostly on next years gear, so ‘cant give too much away yet, but in this shot you dont really see the sail!! Thanks to Jimmie Hepp for the photo.”

Do you compete at a national or international level? If so, you could be in with a chance of securing yourself a prestigous two-digit sail number through the UK Windsurfing Association. While the application process is open to everybody, preference will be given to those regularly competing.

The numbers available are:

  • 41
  • 61
  • 65
  • 69
  • 78

“The UKWA intends to issue these numbers to deserving members at a small charge of £50. These numbers are non transferable, therefore you are not entitled to sell them on, sail numbers remain the property of the UKWA at all times.

Whilst all members are entitled to apply for these numbers, priority will be given to those sailors who regularly compete on the National and International stage right across the disciplines. A UKWA subcommittee will decide who receives the numbers and its decision will be final.

Will Muzza be changing numbers?

Applications will close at midnight on 30 April 2012. A list of successful sailors will be published on Sunday 13th May 2012.”

Luderitz Speed Challenge Confirmed

The dates of the 2012 Luderitz Speed Challenge have been confirmed and registration opened…

Scheduled to run from the 5th November until the 2nd December, the 2012 Luderitz World Speed Sailing attempt is set to be better than ever before.

Two years have been spent constructing a new course in Namibia and this will be the first time many of the top names have fired themselves down it attempting to break the 50-knot barrier. Built 300m further inland from the original course, the new speed run is said to have cleaner wind and be set at a better angle to the prevailing wind – all essential factors in world record attempts.

Zara Davis, Speed Production Record Holder

Current entries include Anders Bringdal, Farrel O’Shea, Andrea Baldini and Zara Davis, who will join them in November? Keep an eye on www.luderitz-speed.com to find out…

For further information and registrations please contact luderitz.speed.challenge@gmail.com.

Izzy Hamilton Reports From Cadiz

The 2012 RS:X World Championships was possibly the windiest RS:X event ever; Izzy Hamilton shares her experiences of Spain…

With several days of racing cancelled due to 50 knots of wind, the RS:X Worlds in Spain will be well-remembered by all attending. A Silver medal for Nick Demsey and a fantastic fourth place for Bryony Shaw were the top results for the British fleet, but the Under 21s performed amazingly as well. Over to Izzy…

“I have just got back home to Cornwall after finishing the World Championships! I finished 17th which I am super happy about - Also I was 2nd Under 21!  At the previous Worlds, in Perth in December, I was 31st. I have been training in Spain on and off since January and the wind averaged 5-20knots. For the whole regatta a local wind blew called the Levante, it averaged 25 and gusted 30 knots on the days we could sail, and for 2 days of the regatta we couldn’t sail – maxed 50knots! Now I am home for a week and then back to training in Weymouth for a week then driving out to Hyere for one of the ISAF World Tour Races.”

Izzy locking it down in super-windy Spain.

Representing the Men’s U21 fleet was Connor Bainbridge who came 4th and 30th overall. Sam Sills and Tom Squires came in 6th and 8th respectively in the extremely challenging conditions.

Congratulations to all the U21 fleet for posting such great results and good luck to Izzy in Hyere.

Sam Ross Clinics – The Latest

We catch up with Sam Ross to find out what is in store for the top coach…

As summer approaches, it’s time to think about getting out on the water and perhaps getting some top tips from windsurf guru, Sam Ross.

The next clinic from Sam will be held at West Wittering on the 7th April.  The ‘Get Freestyle’ course isn’t just for the ‘rubberised youth’, but is a great introduction to aerial freestyle for everyone.

“If there’s a freestyle move you are already stuck on, or you’re fed up of flying out the front, side or backdoor every time you try that illusive Vulcan, Spock or Flaka then it’s time to get some input.

These two days are aimed at adults that really want to get stuck into freestyle and add something different to their sailing. We will use land and water based sessions as well as video analysis to improve your skills on the course as well as take away the knowledge you need to keep progressing.”

Trying to crack the Flaka? Let Sam show you how it's done

Later in the month Sam will be jetting off to Dahab in Egypt to run back-to-back coaching weeks. From April 22nd, anyone happy sailing around upwind, downwind and using a harness can join Sam for his Intermediate clinic. Better planing, footstraps and  waterstarts will ensure you have your best windsurfing year yet. From the 29th April, any Advanced sailors who would like to improve their gybes, learn gybe variations, improve their top speed, jumping and anything beyond will be in for a great week. Offering lots of personal coaching with some top ideas, Sam will get you tuned up and flying across the waters of the Red Sea.

Dahab - flat water blasting paradise

To learn more or book any of the clinics, follow the links below and check out Sam’s website HERE.
