Thomas Traversa: The secret of how I won the 2012 KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup

Thomas Traversa has revealed that the secret of his victory in the 2012 Cold Hawaii World Cup was that his friend Alex Mussolini forced him to take a bigger board on the beach five minutes before the final against Philip Köster on Thursday.

“Alex ran to get the board to me and I trusted him,” Traversa said. Mussolini, who finished sixth and is third overall in the World Cup standings, is old friends with Traversa and was acting as his caddy on the beach.

“He wanted to go out with his 68 (litre) board but I knew he needed more weight because he is light and the conditions were so light,” Mussolini said. “I made the mistake of going out with my 68 in my heat the day before and I could not get upwind.”

“He didn’t want to take it and then we went down to the beach and he said: ‘Oh now I’m not so sure.’ So, I didn’t wait for him to change his mind, I ran and got my 74 litre board. That was five minutes before the start. He then adjusted the straps and put his own sail on just in time.”

“You saw that Philip was way too much downwind. I said to Thomas it was better for him to get 10 to 15 waves (in the heat) and make two good ones, rather than only get four and then the pressure is really on.”

“You need someone like this with you on the beach, to help with your gear and mentally, so you can concentrate only what you need to do on the water.”

Cold Hawaii was Traversa’s first victory on the World Cup tour and he is still on the party wave after beating Köster, the world champion. His girlfriend is in Klitmøller with him and his friends from around the world have been posting greetings on his facebook. They have also been celebrating the emergence of a new star of the tour, at his home in La Ciotat, the town near Marseilles, where the first movie was made by the Lumière brothers.

“Lots of people have been sending me congratulations. That’s almost the best part about winning, to see my friends being so happy,” Traversa said. “My board-shaper, Fabien Vollenweider, called me immediately after the final. He was so proud. He always made my boards and I’ve known him since I was 12,” a happy and tired Traversa said.

Many of his fellow competitors on the tour have noticed a new discipline and focus in the big competitions in Traversa, who has always had talent, over the last couple of years.

But seven months ago such a victory looked unlikely after Traversa broke his left foot. That has happened three times by now. “When you’re injured you get really frustrated but it also gives you time to think,” Traversa said. “And when you go out on water again you have a different mind and you sail smarter.”

Traversa used to compete as a professional in freestyle windsurfing. It was after an injury in 2008 (again a broken left foot) that Traversa decided to change to wave windsurfing.

“I did freestyle windsurfing since I was 16 to 23-years-old and I came third on Fuerteventura in 2007, that was my best result so far – but now it’s first place in Cold Hawaii. I’m super happy about that,” Traversa said.

Next up for 26-year-old Traversa is the PWA World Cup in Sylt and then Red Bull Storm Chase. “I hope the Storm Chase will take place in Ireland,” Traversa said. ”I’ve been there a few times but not a lot of people go there. I like it there, it’s wild.”

Traversa is an explorer. “I love to travel and I’m so happy that windsurfing gives me a reason to do it,” Traversa said. “I’ve been traveling a lot with Alex Mussolini, his wife and kid and my girlfriend Sophia. I really enjoy that, going new places and windsurfing in different conditions.” This year Traversa also went to Iceland and Madagascar.

Cold Hawaii has been a challenge for all the windsurfers with constantly changing conditions and colder temperatures than many are used to. “I don’t mind the cold, once I’m in the water I don’t freeze anymore,” Traversa said.

And the final question as he prepares to leave Klimøller: how did he become the first man to beat Köster for two years?

“I was chasing the good waves to get a high score,” he said. “I let a few pass to get on a bigger wave, that was my strategy. Since I’m light I could move around a bit more than Philip. I wasn’t stressed about falling, I made a few good waves and that was enough. Philip was unlucky.”

2011 PWA Youth Slalom Champion

Enes Yilmazer in Aruba

Enes Yilmazer in Aruba

Turkish slalom sailor Enes Yilmazer (JP / NeilPryde) secures the 2011 Youth Slalom Champion title after an astonishing year on the water.

During the Sylt World Cup prize giving, French slalom whiz Jules Denel (Exocet) was awarded the 2011 youth slalom champion award. Since the prize giving it has come to the attention of the PWA that Turkish slalom talent Enes Yilmazer (JP / NeilPryde) should have been awarded the title.

The mistake occurred due to a calculation error on the PWA’s online database; at the time of prize giving Yilmazer’s date of birth was missing from the database. As Yilmazer is aged under twenty-two and has finished slightly higher on the world rankings ladder than Denel, it is only fair that Yilmazer is awarded the title.

With so many experienced sailors on the racecourse, the slalom fleet is a particularly tough fleet to crack; both sailors have had an exceptional season on the water and have shown some blistering pace around the marks. Yilmazer has been pushing the starts hard all season and challenging the best of them for the top spaces to secure his 24th place finish, whilst Denel has risked everything to ensure he made a name for himself on the slalom course this season.

From all of us at the PWA, we apologise for any inconvenience the error has caused, we would also like to congratulate both sailors on their performance in 2011 and wish them best possible luck for the 2012 season.

PWA Sylt 2011 – Event Summary

PWA Sylt night tow-in

PWA Sylt night tow-in

The 2011 VW PWA Reno World Cup Sylt – event summary: Sylt is hit by ten day of summer preventing the breeze from building but it didn’t stop it being an incredible event full of amazing action from the stars of the PWA.

The world’s finest windsurfers were treated to ten days of stunning weather on Westerland beach in Sylt as a high pressure lingering over Europe brought with it blazing sun, but it also prevented the flags from flying. Despite the wind and waves not making an appearance it didn’t stop the event from being as amazing as ever. Hundreds of thousands of spectators made their way to the event site throughout the week to meet the stars of the PWA, see the trade stalls, listen to the interviews and to enjoy the warm weather.

The huge crowds were also treated to four astonishing tow-in freestyle competitions, SUP races, wave tow-in action, at spot of slalom racing, surfing and the world champions being crowned at the prize giving. The fleets remained patiently on standby throughout the week but were unable to take part in any official competition, therefore leaving the results and world rankings unchanged.

A round of slalom

When the flags started to flutter on the third day, the race crew wasted no time in sending the slalom fleet out to sea. Winds reading around 8-12 knots made for particularly tactful racing on the sailors largest equipment. Ten races of elimination one were completed, however it wasn’t quite enough to achieve an official result.

But, it was enough to see some exceptional sailing from Ross Williams (Tabou / Gaastra), Alberto Menegatti (Starboard / Gaastra), Arnon Dagan (Tabou / Gaastra), Kurosh Kiani (Simmer / Angulo) and the flying Frenchman Cedric Bordes (Tabou / Gaastra / Mystic). The sailors destroyed their opponents in the light wind and made their way into the next round with ease. The crowds also witnessed some upsets as big players Finian Maynard (RRD), Peter Bijl (JP / NeilPryde) and Peter Volwater (Fanatic / MauiSails) as they all went out the elimination early, fortunately for them the round didn’t count towards their overall ranking.

The slalom fleet remained on standby throughout the remaining days however, the high pressure hanging over Europe refused to move, preventing any wind from building.

Freestyle and wave fleets

Bar the tow-in freestyle and wave action the fleets were unable to hit the water for any official heats, therefore leaving the results and rankings unchanged. Having sailed two insane competitions this season and walked away with first places at both events Daida Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) has managed to retain the world title for another year.

Tow-in freestyle

Throughout the week the world’s elite freestylers battled it out in four insane tow-in freestyle competitions. With 1000 Euros up for grabs each time, the sailors went all out trying to upstage each other with every run, much to the delight of the huge crowds.

Kicking off the week, Jose Estredo (Fanatic / North) was the man on fire behind the jet ski, wowing the judges with his super-fast burners into funnels, the world champion Steven Van Broeckhoven (F2 / Gaastra) proved he was also handy in the light winds launching into tremendous air funnels off the back of the small waves.

As the week progressed the water flattened off and the sailors got more and more used to the tow-in allowing them to break the boundaries of tow-in freestyle and up the game with the moves they were pulling. Estredo remained on amazing form winning the next two competitions, breaking the judges’ scales with mind-blowing funnel in burners. The brothers from Bonaire Taty Frans (Starboard / MauiSails / Mystic / Maui Ultra Fins) and Tonky Frans (Tabou / Gaastra) brought their unique style to the competition going for each move one-handed or as close to the crowds as possible.

Also making a guest appearance in the tow-in, former world freestyle champions Ricardo Campello (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) and the Marcilio Browne (Fanatic / North / MFC) dusted off their freestyle boards and delivered spectacular burners and burners into funnel to make the podiums.

The crescendo for the tow-in came in the form of the Panasonic night tow-in freestyle competition. The beach was jam-packed full of spectators, and the water was lit-up with powerful spot lights, providing an amazing stage for the world best to do their thing. Van Broeckhoven made his way into the final with ease by landing a perfect triple jumping funnel, as did Estredo with one of the fastest burner- funnels of the week. Also excelling was Bjorn Saragoza (Starboard / Hot Sails) who delivered a super-stylish one-handed double funnel.

Having been so amazing all week, Estredo was unlucky in the final and he went down on both of his moves, opening up the top spot for Van Broeckhoven to step-up with a triple funnel. Saragoza made his way onto the podium for the first time this season with a double air funnel and Browne stole third with a perfect burner into funnel.

SUP races

Wanting to keep the action going the PWA arranged two adrenaline fuelled SUP races, the sailors arranged themselves into three and four man teams and fought their way around the three-mark course. Proving they had the most power, the elite team made up of Browne, Kauli Seadi (JP / NeilPryde) and Nayra Alonso (Fanatic / Severne) left the competition in their wake in the first race when the waves were up, but favoring the flat water the French team made up of Antoine Albeau (JP / NeilPryde), Cedric Bordes (Tabou / Gaastra / Mystic), Julien Quentel (RRD / NeilPryde) and Fanny Aubet (JP / NeilPryde) stole the show in the second race.

The official 2011 men’s slalom rankings
Bjorn Dunkerbeck (Starboard / Severne / Mystic / DunkerbeckEyewear) has returned to glory in the 2011 season, having played second fiddle to Antoine Albeau (JP / NeilPryde) for the last five year. Antoine Albeau (JP / NeilPryde) has secured his podium finish with two event wins, and in third place sits Ben Van Der Steen (Starboard / Loft / Mystic) having had an exceptional season on tour.

There were many talented youths fighting their way around the race course this year, but it is Jules Denel (Exocet) that walks away with the youth slalom champion trophy. Denel been charging this season and has been up there with the best of them. We expect big things from Denel next season.

PWA Sylt 2011 – Preview

Bjorn Dunkerbeck at PWA Sylt 2010

Bjorn Dunkerbeck at PWA Sylt 2010

Reno PWA Sylt 2011 – event preview: The tension is rising on the island of Sylt as the greatest windsurfing event on the planet and the dramatic conclusion to the 2011 slalom, wave and freestyle competition season draws ever closer.

For 28 years running, the Sylt world cup has been the largest and most spectacular windsurfing event on the planet. Featuring all three of the main disciplines, competition is spread over ten days. The event attracts well over 200,000 spectators to witness the world’s best slalom sailors hurl themselves around the race course, see the freestylers spin their way through each heat and watch the wave fleet launching into the most death-defying jumps.

Due to the exposed location of the island, the weather conditions on Westerland beach can range from ferocious wind and waves to flat calm freestyle and slalom heaven. Sylt is the final challenge for many of the worlds best and it takes a true all-rounder to secure a victory on its testing waters.

Off the water there will be plenty to keep the crowds entertained including clinics from the pro’s, a multitude of surf shops, autograph signings, the Panasonic surf simulator, plenty of parties and much much more.

What’s the deal?

The ten day super grand slam will take place between 23rd September to the 2nd October, marking the seventh and final event on the men’s slalom and freestyle tour, the fourth event on the men’s wave tour and the third stop on the women’s wave tour. The sailors will be spinning, flying and going full throttle for a taste of the €105,000 prize money and those super important end of season world ranking points, that will determine once and for all where the sailors finish.

Men’s Slalom

Having sailed an exceptional year Bjorn Dunkerbeck (Starboard / Severne / Mystic / DunkerbeckEyewear) has already been announced the 2011 world slalom champion, with four event wins out of six. But, he will no doubt be in Sylt to stamp down his authority on the fleet one last time before the competition season is over.

Having been knocked off the top spot for the first time in five years, Antoine Albeau (JP / NeilPryde) is likely to be more fired up than ever to secure his second place finish. However with the likes of Ben Van Der Steen (Starboard / Loft / Mystic) hot on his heels, he will have to make sure he sails an incredible week to keep his position.

Battling it out for fourth and fifth place Cyril Moussilmani (Starboard / North) and Finian Maynard (RRD) will be charging around the course and hitting the start-lines at full speed to outdo each other.

Also in the mix and fighting to keep their top ten positions, Micah Buzianis (JP / NeilPryde), Peter Volwater (Fanatic / MauiSails), Julien Quentel (RRD / NeilPryde), Josh Angulo (Angulo / Gun / Dakine) and Jimmy Diaz (Starboard / North) will be launching themselves down the straights, and flying around the corners.

As the slalom season comes to a close, expect the sailors to be pushing the starts harder than ever, pile-ups at the marks and a spectacular show of speed and agility.

Men’s Waves

With three wins in the bag, the wonder kid Philip Koster (Starboard / NeilPryde / Dakine / Maui Ultra Fins) has earned himself the 2011 men’s world wave title with one event spare. Koster has been pulling perfect double forwards and mind-blowing maneuvers on the waves all season, prepare to be amazed when he hits the water in Sylt.

The man with some of the highest jumps on tour Ricardo Campello (JP / NeilPryde / MFC), wowed the crowds in Klitmoller with his super-high pushloop forwards. Campello will be looking to retain his second place, but with the likes of Kauli Seadi (JP / NeilPryde) and Victor Fernandez Lopez (Fanatic / North / MFC) close behind, he will have to fly higher than ever to retain his position.

Danny Bruch (Starboard / Severne / AL360), Dario Ojeda (Tabou / Simmer / Dakine / MFC) and Thomas Traversa (Tabou / Gaastra) are all in hot competition for a fifth place finish; the sailors will need to be on top form to work their way into the top five.

Also in the mix and hoping for a top ten finish, Alex Mussolini (Tabou / Gaastra), Marcilio Browne (Fanatic / North / MFC) and Ross Williams (Tabou / Gaastra) will be throwing their highest jumps to win the judges affections.

Women’s Waves

Over in the women’s fleet, the current tour leader Daida Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) unfortunately has not registered for the event, therefore opening the door up to her sister, Iballa Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne). However Iballa will has to pull her cleanest stalled forward loops and her slickest wave rides to earn the title and fend of the advances from super stylish Nayra Alonso (Fanatic / Severne), wave ripper Karin Jaggi (Patrik / Severne) and super-powerful Evi Tsape (F2 / North).

Also fighting for a place in the top five will be Laure Treboux (Fanatic / North), Alice Arutkin (Starboard / North), Fanny Aubet (JP / NeilPryde) and Heike Reimann (Hot Sails).

Men’s Freestyle

The men’s freestyle fleet has also witnessed a new world champion rise through the ranks with one event spare. Belgian freestyle maestro Steven Van Broeckhoven (F2 / Gaastra) has blown the judges away with his bone dry culos to win three out of six events this year.

In second place sits the super technical Kiri Thode (Starboard / Gaastra), Thode has earned himself podium positions at every event this year, and he has had one of his finest seasons on tour with two event wins.

Four times world champion Jose Estredo (Fanatic / North) started the year slightly further down the ranks than he had hoped, however after two amazing competitions in the Canaries he is back on the podium. Estredo will be pulling is fastest burners to secure his place at the top.

Further down the ranks, Taty Frans (Starboard / MauiSails / Mystic / Maui Ultra Fins), Davy Scheffers (Tabou / Gaastra), Tonky Frans (Tabou / Gaastra) and Anthony Ruenes (Tabou / Simmer) will be fighting it out for places in the top five, and pulling their most daring maneuvers to impress the crowds.

Constructors’ Championships

The brands have also been in fierce competition throughout the year, and as the competition season draws to a close the top dogs at the board and sail companies will be keeping an eye on their riders and how they perform on their equipment. Currently leading the board brands is Starboard, with three world title to their name in Slalom, Wave and Freestyle. JP is sat in second place with Fanatic, Tabou, and RRD close behind. Over on the sail brands, NeilPryde currently leads the pack with Severne, North and Gaastra in hot pursuit. Everything will come down to the final event in Sylt so keep your eyes peeled for who is performing well and on what.

What’s the plan?

With so many competitors the 2011 PWA Reno world cup promises to be a spectacular show, registration day will kick off at 11:30am-2pm on Friday 23rd September and the skippers meeting will kick off at 9:00am on Saturday 24th September with the first possible start to competition at 9:30am.

KIA @coldhawaii PWA Klitmoller – 2011 Event Round-Up

Philip Koster at Cold Hawaii

Philip Koster at Cold Hawaii

KIA @coldhawaii World Cupevent summary: Klitmoller lives up to its name of Cold Hawaii and provides insane conditions for the third stop on the men’s wave tour, allowing Philip Koster to claim the world title with one event spare.

Winds reaching well over forty knots and waves breaking over mast high thrashed the Klitmoller coastline for three days of epic competition. The ferocious storm brought with is some of the fiercest conditions witnessed on the world tour in 2011. The combination of the amazing conditions and the world’s most radical wave riders led to an insane show and the third stop on the men’s wave tour to be completed in record time. The crowds were treated to monster jumps, huge forwards and super-aggressive slashes as the sailors battled their way through each heat.

As the most interactive event on the tour, the 2011 KIA @coldhawaii world cup has broken records in the way that windsurfing is shared online, with live scoring for each heat, a live chat roll and all the action streamed live for thousands of people to tune in a catch the amazing show.

Single elimination

After a gentle morning spent registering and rigging on the first day, Klitmoller came alive, the waves started to peel over the reef and the wind blew up to twenty knots allowing the first seven heats of the single elimination to be completed.

PWA legend Lars Petersen (JP / NeilPryde), made his return to the competition scene with his perfect wave selection allowing him to sail past his opponent, along with Phil Horrocks (JP / Gaastra), Mikkel Asmussen (RRD / Simmer / MFC), Andreas Olandersson (Simmer, MFC), Adam Lewis (Point-7), Kevin Mevissen (Mystic) and Germany’s Florian Jung (RRD / Gun / Dakine / Maui Ultra Fins). The sailors looked super comfortable sailing on the North Sea and ready to face their higher seeded opponents.

The storm had really kicked in for the second day of competition, bringing with it really extreme conditions and forcing the sailors out on their smallest equipment.

With two wave rides and two jumps counting towards their scores, the sailors were fired up and quickly pulling their most impressive moves to fend off their opponents. The second round of competition saw many of the top seeded sailors quickly take their positions in the following heats and a few surprise exits from major players, Peter Volwater (Fanatic / MauSails), Eleazar Alonso (Naish / Naish) and Camille Juban (Gun / MFC).

The third round of competition saw exceptional sailing from Thomas Traversa (Tabou / Gaastra) to dispose of his team mate Alex Mussolini (Tabou / Gaastra). Traversa went on to face the Brazilian Kauli Seadi (JP / NeilPryde), and despite his enormous jumps, it wasn’t enough to stop a very on form Seadi.

Also reveling in the crazy conditions and working his way past his opponents on his home ground, local legend Kenneth Danielsen (F2 / Simmer) was flying high throughout the day, and ripping the waves to pieces to secure a well-earned fifth place. It took the might of Ricardo Campello (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) and his extreme double forward loops to put an end to Danielsen’s advances in the single elimination.

Brits John Skye (RRD / RRD / MFC) and Ross Williams (Tabou / Gaastra) were fighting hard in the tough conditions and both sailors made their way into the top eight, with Skye defeating fellow countryman Jamie Hancock (Tabou / Gaastra) with his precise jumps, and Williams slaying heavy hitting Dario Ojeda (Tabou / Simmer / Dakine / MFC), by picking up a gigantic wave and putting in one of the longest rides of the day.

It was no surprise, the top four spots were filled with the masters Seadi, the 2010 world champion Victor Fernandez Lopez (North / Fanatic / MFC), Campello and the current tour leader Philip Koster (Starboard /NeilPryde / Dakine / Maui Ultra Fins). Having finished in ninth place in Tenerife, Fernandez Lopez was eager to rectify his position and quickly went about landing perfect double forwards and delivering some smooth wave rides to secure his place in the winner’s final, knocking Seadi in the losers final.

Campello was the man on fire in the radical conditions, taking every opportunity to launch into his most impressive jumps. Campello wowed the crowds with a gargantuan double forward loop and a well-executed pushloop forward. Koster tried his hardest to make his jumps but he wasn’t looking his usual self against Campello. Campello was rewarded for his bravery and he cruised into the final, pushing Koster in the loser’s final for the first time this season.

A wild battle between Seadi and Koster saw both parties charging around for the largest ramps and finest waves to ride, Seadi had been selecting the best all day, but this time it wasn’t enough to stop Koster from taking the win. Koster nailed his jumps early on in the heat and then focused his attention on wave riding to take third place.

Winners Final

Campello’s winning streak continued into the winners final and he went onto defeat Fernandez Lopez with his astounding double forwards and an 11.5 point scoring pushloop forward. Fernandez Lopez tried to match Campello’s moves but he was unable to gain the same height in his double forward’s.

Double elimination

With the opportunity to improve their overall scores and a second chance in the competition, the sailors were eager to take advantage of the nuking conditions and continue straight into the double elimination.

Mevissen took the double elimination by storm and sailed each heat like it was his last, hitting each ramp with as much speed as he could to launch into amazing pushloops and super stalled forward loops. Mevissen took down some of the finest of the international competitors including, Mussolini, Kai Lenny (Naish / Naish), and Skye. However his rampage through the ranks was stopped by Danielsen with his enormous pushloops and backloops, leaving Mevissen in seventh.

Experienced competitor Volwater made up for his initial mistakes in the single elimination and conducted his heats with a well thought out strategy. Volwater ensured that he didn’t let the current wash him away and made sure he was always upwind to catch the biggest waves, the steepest ramps and most importantly he was in front of the judges. Volwater passed through three heats until Horrocks took him down with a well-executed double forward loop.

Ojeda and Dany Bruch (Starboard / Severne / AL 360) each delivered mind-blowing performances to make their way into ninth position and seventh position, with Ojeda throwing one of the only frontside aerials in the competition and Bruch squeezing past Marcilio Browne (Fanatic / North / MFC) with a double forward in the closing seconds of the heat.  Bruch went onto sneak past Williams with a perfect wave in the closing seconds of the heat, whilst Ojeda was taken out by Danielsen.

The sailor that caused the most carnage in the double elimination was Traversa. Traversa made his way into fourth position by ripping the waves to pieces taking down Horrocks, Danielsen, and Seadi. Seadi put up a big fight, by selecting the largest waves in the heat but Traversa was obviously in his element and enjoying the onshore port tack conditions.

Having sailed four astounding heats, Traversa was still firing with all guns blazing in his heat against Koster, throwing big backside aerials and super aggressive frontside hits, whilst Koster spent the first half of the heat looking slightly underpowered. However in one swift minute Koster stormed into the lead with a perfect bolt upright double forward loop and a humongous backloop, allowing him to advance onto face Fernandez Lopez.

Just one heat separated Koster from the world title, if he defeated Fernandez Lopez he would walk away as the 2011 world champion, and if he lost, Fernandez Lopez would be in with a chance of taking the title. Not one to let the pressure get the better of him Koster sailed the heat of his life, with a planning double forward loop, a backside 360 and reverse on one wave. Shortly after Koster was awarded the 2011 world champion title, having won the heat with a 5-0 decision from the judges.

Final

However the battle wasn’t quite over and he still had to face Campello for first place. With the adrenaline pumping through his veins, Koster wowed the crowds with his scale-braking wave rides where he was awarded twelve points for one ride that included an insane one-handed goiter and a taka. Campello tried his hardest to slay the master with his double forward but there was no stopping the wonder kid. Aware of how the heat had gone, Campello made his way back to the beach to prepare for the super-final.

Super-final

The hard work still wasn’t over for Koster, in order to win the event; he had to defeat Campello for a second time. Obviously enjoying his moment, Koster went on to up his game even higher as he launched into a wave 360 where he landed back in the wave, and then he boosted straight into a huge double forward on the way out. Campello replied with a monster double forward in front of the judges, but Koster was on fire.

Having sailed four mind-blowing heats, Koster was awarded the world title and the event win to the cheers from the crowds on the beach.

Super-session

With the competition completed in record time there was plenty of time left to run a super-session. With heats made up of ten men each, the sailors had twenty minutes to launch into the most radical, and daring jumps to advance into the final.

As one of the finest jumpers on tour Campello was the man in charge throughout the super-session, seeing him win the final with a particularly impressive and perfectly landed pushloop forward. The new world champion Koster flew into second place with a spectacular double forward loop and Fernandez Lopez stole third with a double forward of his own.

The Kia @coldhawaii community SUP session

The fifth day of competition witnessed Klitmoller deliver perfect SUP conditions, with light winds and waves peeling in around waist high. Seadi and Bruch we quick to prove they had the skills on the surf, transferring their unique styles from windsurfing on to the SUPs, but it wasn’t enough to fend of the SUP professional Casper Steinfath (Naish).

What next?

The final stop on the PWA world tour will take the sailors to the brutal shores of Sylt in Germany, for the 28th anniversary of the event. Sylt is the largest event on the calendar and attracts well over 200,000 spectators; it will also witness the conclusion to the men’s slalom series, the men’s freestyle series and the men and women’s wave series. Make sure you tuned into the PWA website from the 23rdSeptember – 2nd October for ten days of intense competition.

KIA @coldhawaii PWA Klitmoller – Day 4

Ricardo Campello

Ricardo Campello

KIA @coldhawaii World Cup – Day four: Insane jumps, monster loops, and massive crashes from the world’s best jumpers in the SURF Magazin super-session.

With the wind and waves still firing, the world champion crowned and the official competition completed, the crowds on the beach were still hungry for more entertainment and action from the world’s finest wave riders.

Cue the SURF Magazin super-session. The format was simple, the riders would be separated into two heats of ten men each and the sailors had twenty minutes to perform their most radical jumps. The five riders from each heat with the most extreme airs would advance into final, where they were fighting for one of three iPad 2’s. However there was a twist, if one of the sailors dare pull the first ever triple loop in competition, they would be awarded with all three Ipads.

Heat 1
Local ripper Christopher Friis kicked off the proceedings with a super clean tweaked pushloop; however he was soon upstaged as the sailors hunted for ramps. The newly crowded world champion Philip Koster (Starboard / NeilPryde / Dakine / Maui Ultra Fins) was next to make a move, with his world famous bolt upright double forward loop, moving him straight into first place. Next up Victor Fernandez Lopez (Fanatic / North) stepped up to the table with a double forward of his own, along with Marcilio Browne (Fanatic / North / MFC). British wave maestro Adam Lewis (Point-7), diversified the jumps with an incredible shove-it cheese roll, scoring seven points from the judges. Towards the end of the heat it was a fight for fifth place with Peter Volwater (Fanatic / MauiSails), Andreas Olandersson (Simmer / MFC) and Friis all delivering a great show, Olandersson managed to step ahead with a super clean one handed backloop but he was soon over taken by Eleazar Alonso Sanchez (Naish / Naish) for his one handed backloop, keeping his back hand off all the way around.

The top five advancing sailors were Koster, Fernandez Lopez, Lewis, & Browne for their perfect double forwards, and Alonso for his one handed backloop.

Heat 2
Moving quickly in the second heat, Timo Mullen (Starboard / Severne) opened up with huge backloop out the back of the arena. The German jumper Leon Jamaer (Fanatic / Hot Sails), nailed a one handed backloop, but crashed hard with a pushloop-forward attempt. High flying Ricardo Campello (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) then spotted his ramp and launched into an enormous 8.5 point scoring double forward loop followed by Frances Jules Denel (Exocet), as he flew around his own double forward loop. Mixing things up a little, Alex Mussolini (Tabou / Gaastra) pulled an incredible one footed backloop out the back. Brazilian Kauli Seadi (JP / NeilPryde) was late to make his move but sealed the deal with a perfect double forward loop.

Campello, Denel, Seadi, Mussolini and Jamaer made their way into the final for their exceptional jumping.

Final
All eyes were on Koster and Campello in the final, and hopes were high for the triple loop, however it looked particularly tough to find a perfect ramp in the onshore conditions, however that didn’t stop the pros putting on an outstanding performance. Lewis was first to move and he wowed the crowds with a forward loop, ejecting his equipment mid maneuver sending it flying. Following that the sailors filled the air with a quick succession of jumps launching into anything from forward loops, to pushloop and backloops. Browne shone straight through into first place with a perfect double forward scoring 9.5 points, Koster then matched him with his own bone-dry performance. But really impressing the judges was Campello with an ankle dry, super-high and perfect pushloop forward. Campello was awarded twelve points for his efforts and he went straight into first place. Seeing Campello’s jump, the sailors tried to match him with non-stop double forward loops. Jamaer was the only other sailor to try the pushloop-forward but he was unable to hold the landing. In order to confirm his position in first place Campello then flew into the highest double forward loop of the competition to close the heat.

The SURF Magazin super-session results:
1st Ricardo Campello (JP / NeilPryde / MFC)
2nd Philip Koster (Starboard / NeilPryde / Dakine / Maui Ultra Fins)
3rd Victor Fernandez Lopez (Fanatic / North)

There will be plenty more action coming your way over the remaining days out here in Klitmoller, the skippers meeting is scheduled for 1pm tomorrow, so make sure you stay up to date on the PWA website and the event website.

KIA @coldhawaii PWA Klitmoller – Day 3

2011 World Wave Champ, Philip Koster

2011 World Wave Champ, Philip Koster

KIA @coldhawaii World Cup – Day three: Scale breaking waverides and colossal jumps put Philip Koster in the top spot in Klitmoller, and with three event wins under his belt, he walks away as the 2011 men’s world wave champion.

Klitmoller is blessed with a third day of world class wavesailing conditions, allowing the PWA crew to pick up the action where they left off yesterday, and the remaining twelve sailors to fly, spin and slash their way through the double elimination.

With the winds still blowing strong and the waves slightly cleaner than yesterday, the judges opted to keep the format the same with two jumps and two rides counting towards the sailor’s scores.

Double elimination

First onto the water was Brit John Skye (RRD / MFC), against a very on form Kevin Mevissen (Mystic). Having battled his way from the bottom of the ranks, Mevissen was eager to continue with his winning streak. Both sailors launched into their finest jumps, matching each other on points and then spent their time working on the waves, in the end it came down to a 3-2 decision from the judges with Mevissen just taking the advantage for his super-clean pushloop.

On the other side of the elimination, Dany Bruch (Starboard / Severne / AL360) went head to head with Ross Williams (Tabou / Gaastra). Bruch opened the heat with a double forward and a backloop, whilst Williams opted to focus on waves. The pair continued with this strategy for the whole heat and their scores were fairly similar throughout, until Bruch managed to score an amazing wave in the closing seconds, knocking Williams out of the competition.

The tight heats continued with local boy Kenneth Danielsen (F2 / Simmer / Mystic), taking on Dario Ojeda (Tabou / Simmer / Dakine / MFC). The pair matched each other move for move, but eventually Danielsen’s local knowledge pulled through and he hit the steepest ramp sending him skywards. Danielson’s superb sailing saw him blitz past Mevissen in the following heat and on to face France’s Thomas Traversa (Tabou / Gaastra).

Having taken down Phil Horrocks (JP / Gaastra), Traversa was full of confidence when it came to facing deadly Bruch. The pair matched each other on the jumping front, but Traversa secured two amazing wave rides by flowing effortlessly from rail to rail, to secure his pass into the next round.

Tremendous Traversa continued with his warpath through the double elimination, bumping his score all the way up to fourth place. Danielson was next to fall victim to Traversa’s frontside aerials and super-tweaked forward loops. Brazilian Kauli Seadi (JP / NeilPryde) put up a big fight, by selecting the largest waves in the heat but Traversa was obviously in his element and enjoying the onshore port tack conditions.

Having sailed four astounding heats, Traversa was still firing with all guns blazing in his heat against Philip Koster (Starboard / NeilPryde / Dakine / Maui Ultra Fins), throwing big backside aerials and super aggressive frontside hits, whilst Koster spent the first half of the heat looking slightly underpowered. However in one swift minute Koster stormed into the lead with a perfect bolt upright double forward loop and a humongous backloop, allowing him to advance onto face the 2010 world champion Victor Fernandez Lopez (Fanatic / North).

Just one heat separated Koster from the world title, if he defeated Fernandez Lopez he would walk away as the 2011 world champion, and if he lost, Fernandez Lopez would be in with a chance of taking the title. Not one to let the pressure get the better of him Koster, sailed the heat of his life, with a planning double forward loop, a backside 360 and reverse on one wave. Shortly after Koster was awarded the 2011 world champion title, having won the heat with a 5-0 decision from the judges.

Final

However the battle wasn’t quite over and he still had to face Ricardo Campello (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) for first place.

Super-final

The hard work wasn’t over for Koster In order to win the event; he had to defeat Campello for a second time.

Words from the world champion

Philip Koster (Starboard / NeilPryde / Dakine / Maui Ultra Fins)
“I feel amazing, I can’t believe it, it’s a dream come true. I am so happy I have won another event and now I am the world champion. I can’t imagine a better day, I am so stoked!”
